Although business schools are generally secretive about how they weigh the GMAT in the admissions process, there is plenty of secondary evidence of the exam's importance. Rankings methodologies based on selectivity (such as those published by U.S. News & World Report) give institutions a strong incentive to accept higher-scoring students, because higher average scores lead to higher rankings. Furthermore, GMAT scores measure student aptitude in a standardized fashion, which is much easier for admissions officials to consider than more subjective criteria such as course rigor or letters of recommendation. Admissions is a labor-intensive process, and standardized tests help ease the burden. Some admissions consultants believe that the GMAT is responsible for more than 20% of admissions decisions and more than twice as influential as undergraduate GPA. Finally, the average GMAT scores of prestigious business schools clearly demonstrate a preference for applicants with elite GMAT performance. The total GMAT range for the latest entering MBA class at the Stanford Graduate School of Business, for example, is 610-790, but the average score is 737 (which is in the 97th percentile of all test-takers).

I took the GMAT this past weekend in Manhattan and got a 680. I'm quite happy with the score - a bit frustrated as I wanted a 700, but still pleased. The course was helpful. The best part I feel was the time spent drilling - and answering our questions on specific problems.

Meet a Wellington GMAT Tutor: Burton S.
Burton S., a Wellington native, was educated at Brown University (bachelor of arts in history) and at Michigan State University's Broad College of Business (master of business administration). He returned home to Wellington in 2017 after a career as a financial adviser and GMAT teacher in the Chicago area. He has taught GMAT prep to more than 500 students, many of whom have been accepted to the most selective graduate business programs.
Burton bases his teaching style on the similarities he sees between instruction and sales. "There are far fewer differences between recruiting clients and teaching students than most people realize," he says. "Persuasion is fundamental to both pursuits. If I can convince my GMAT students that it is in their best interest to pursue certain study strategies, then I know that they will succeed."
