The College Board considers SAT scores of 480 Evidence-Based Reading and Writing and 530 Math (for a composite score of 1010) to be the benchmark for college and career readiness. According to College Board data, a total score of 1010 is in the 41st percentile of all SAT users, meaning that about 59% of all test-takers meet this standard. Highly selective universities, however, invariably expect their applicants to produce SAT scores that demonstrate skills far beyond mere college readiness. Ivy League universities, for example, typically admit classes in which at least 75% of members scored 1400 or higher on the SAT, which is in the 97th percentile. The 25th-percentile composite SAT score for the most recent class at Dartmouth College, for instance, is 1410, and the 25th-percentile SAT score at Brown University is 1440. Students who wish to submit competitive applications to the best American universities absolutely cannot neglect rigorous SAT preparation.
