Prospects for employment in the legal profession to a great extent depend on institutional reputation, and graduates of prominent law schools can usually expect better outcomes than their peers from lesser programs. Manhattan Review's test prep students have been hired by a wide range of organizations, from major law firms and Fortune 500 companies to government agencies and other public organizations. Your legal future begins with the best law school application you can possibly submit. The law school rankings published by U.S. News & World Report (USNWR) consider a number of factors to calculate the position of each individual program, but other sources have enumerated law schools based purely on reported employment outcomes. The legal website Above the Law (ATL) is an example of this latter approach, and when considered solely by the percentage of graduates employed within nine months of finishing their law degrees, some top programs underperform their USNWR rank. Stanford Law School, for instance, was ranked as 2018's second-best law school by USNWR, but it places seventh using the ATL methodology. Harvard Law School, third with USNWR but tenth with ATL, is another notable example. Conversely, some schools fared better under ATL than under USNWR. Overperforming law schools include Duke (USNWR #10 and ATL #2), the University of Chicago (USNWR #4 and ATL #1), and the University of Michigan (USNWR #8 and ATL #4). Law school applicants should consider the total picture, including employment numbers, when deciding which programs to target.
